Berlin Unveils Silivri Prison-Cell Artwork for Jailed Istanbul Mayor

Vor dem Roten Rathaus in Berlin ist am Mittwoch im Beisein von Politikern ein Nachbau einer Zelle des Istanbuler Hochsicherheitsgefängnisses Silivri aufgestellt worden - als Zeichen der Solidarität mit dem seit März in Silivri inhaftierten Istanbuler Bürgermeister und Oppositionspolitiker Ekrem Imamoglu.

  • A near life-size replica of a Silivri prison cell, displayed in a glass case, has been installed outside the Rotes Rathaus.
  • Governing Mayor Kai Wegner called Berlin “the city of freedom” and said the city will closely monitor Imamoglu’s situation and other opposition detentions.
  • Ekrem Imamoglu has been held in pre-trial detention for about six months without an indictment following his March arrest on terror and corruption allegations.
