Overview

  • Five states—Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Sachsen and Schleswig-Holstein—have jointly presented the “Berlin+” concept for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Summer Games
  • The proposal relies on more than 90 percent existing venues, featuring the Olympiastadion for athletics and a Messe Berlin site as an Olympic Village for over 16,000 athletes
  • Signature events include beach volleyball at the Brandenburg Gate and a marathon route past the Museumsinsel, while sailing, canoeing and other disciplines are spread across regional sites
  • Mayor Kai Wegner has earmarked €500,000 for citizen dialogue events and pledged public participation as the NOlympia Berlin initiative pursues a referendum
  • The DOSB will review all national bids by September 2025 and choose Germany’s candidate by autumn 2026 amid rival applications from Munich, Hamburg and the Rhein-Ruhr region
