Berlin U2 to Close Oct. 20–Nov. 2 for Alexanderplatz Signal Switchover

BVG is replacing a 40-year relay interlocking at Alexanderplatz with a digital system to stabilize service and lay groundwork for future partial automation.

Overview

  • Service will be suspended between Senefelderplatz and Stadtmitte for two weeks, with bus replacement operating on the closed section.
  • The new electronic interlocking will replace the relay system controlling signals between Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and Spittelmarkt.
  • BVG says the upgrade will improve reliability and is a prerequisite for partial automation, with CBTC planned on U5 from 2029 and U8 from 2032 while retaining drivers.
  • U2 is slated to return to a four-minute interval from 13 January, backed by weekly deliveries of new Stadler trains and a goal of 140 new cars in service by year-end.
  • Only 13 of 35 U-Bahn interlockings are digitized so far; spare parts for legacy equipment are scarce and removed components will serve as donors during a conversion expected to take more than a decade.
