Berlin U2 Segment Halted as Construction Works Ripple Across Munich and Eastern Lines

Safety repairs tied to modernization projects are driving short suspensions and timetable cuts.

Overview

  • Berlin’s BVG has suspended U2 service between Theodor-Heuss-Platz and Ruhleben through November 30 with replacement buses, and from November 22 tram line 21 will be split with shuttle buses to Hegemeisterweg.
  • From mid-January to mid-May, the underground Nollendorfplatz hub will close for emergency tunnel-ceiling work, fully suspending U4 and curtailing U1 and U3 after experts warned the damage cannot wait until the 2029 overhaul.
  • In Munich, residual issues after autumn Stammstrecke works bring night cancellations and a construction weekend from November 15–17 with only one S‑Bahn line crossing the inner city, while U1/U2 late-night service runs every 20 minutes until March 2026.
  • Deutsche Bahn will close the Gera–Greiz route from late November 16 until December 12 to replace signal technology, with RE3 and RB4 services on buses as part of a broader digital signalling upgrade through 2027.
  • In Dresden, the GDL has called a Wednesday protest over plans to reduce onboard attendants, a move the VVO says would affect only S‑Bahn services and not before 2030, with no layoffs planned.
