Berlin Traffic Fatalities Surge to 55 in 2024, Marking a Seven-Year High

The number of traffic-related deaths in Berlin rose sharply last year, with older pedestrians disproportionately affected.

Berlin recorded 55 traffic fatalities in 2024, a significant increase from 33 in 2023, which had been the lowest figure in years.
This marks the highest number of traffic deaths in Berlin since 2016, when 56 fatalities were reported.
Half of the victims in 2024 were seniors aged 65 or older, highlighting a concerning trend among older pedestrians.
Pedestrians accounted for 24 of the fatalities, followed by 11 cyclists, 7 car occupants, and 6 motorcyclists, with others involving e-scooters, buses, and trucks.
The rise in fatalities was evident early in the year, with 25 deaths reported by the end of June 2024.
