Berlin to Sound Official Sirens for First Time in 30 Years on Sept. 11 Warntag

Officials say the revival reflects a changed risk landscape spanning storms, outages, cyberattacks, war.

Overview

  • More than 200 newly installed devices will sound a one‑minute alarm at 11:00 with an all‑clear at 11:45 during the nationwide test.
  • The network is slated to grow to about 450 sirens by year’s end with more than 100 additional units planned over the following two years.
  • Sirens use solar power and batteries, are centrally controlled, and reach at least 130 decibels with some up to 140.
  • Berlin reports slow progress on 44 district ‘Leuchttürme’ hubs, with only 14 fully operational and 4 partly ready.
  • The Senate plans three extra civil‑protection staff per district and 147 volunteer information points, alongside closer Bundeswehr cooperation with the federal government providing many of roughly 630 needed vehicles.
