Berlin to Close Outdoor Pools on Sept. 7 With Option for Weather-Dependent Extensions

After a €3 million energy subsidy cut, pool heating has been switched off, ticket prices have risen under dynamic pricing, prompting a Sept. 7 season end with possible weather-dependent extensions.

Overview

  • A municipal budget cut removed €3 million in energy funding from the Berliner Bäderbetriebe, driving cost-saving steps across the city’s outdoor pools.
  • The operator has set an official season end for Sept. 7 but will extend openings at select pools if weather conditions remain favourable.
  • Most outdoor basins are unheated this year, with heating retained only at Sommerbad Seestraße, Prinzenbad and Freibad Wilmersdorf to maintain select pools at roughly 22 °C.
  • From late April through July, outdoor pools and Strandbad Wannsee drew about 760,000 visits—some 110,000 fewer than in the prior year during a cooler spring.
  • Police reported 141 swimming pool–related offences from April to Aug. 10, up from 132 last year, and intervened in a mass brawl at the Neukölln Columbiabad that left five people injured, prompting changes to entry procedures and policing.
