Berlin to Close Görlitzer Park Nightly With €800,000 Security Contract Starting in March

City officials say the new gates and turnstiles are meant to curb drug activity as well as violence.

Overview

  • Berlin’s Senate says a private security service will lock the gates each evening, reopen them in the morning, and conduct checks inside the park.
  • The annual cost for the night security service is set at about €800,000, disclosed in response to questions from Left-party lawmakers.
  • New fence sections and entrance gates with turnstiles cost roughly €1.8 million and are largely complete, according to the Senate.
  • The nightly closure is planned to begin around March, with gates expected to be shut from about 22:00 or 23:00, while staffing levels are still being finalized.
  • Guards are already on site to protect the new fence following vandalism incidents, including the theft of a turnstile.
