Berlin Tightens New Year Fireworks Rules as Police Log 18,000 Illegal Seizures

Officials say a limited firing window, new exclusion zones and intensified checks are meant to curb severe injuries and clamp down on illicit pyrotechnics moving in from abroad.

Overview

  • Reinickendorf, Pankow and Marzahn-Hellersdorf reaffirmed that private fireworks are allowed only from Dec. 31 at 18:00 to Jan. 1 at 07:00, with Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg granting the same 13‑hour exception.
  • Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg warned of fines up to €50,000 for violations and added an area around the Admiralbrücke where fireworks are neither allowed nor permitted to be carried.
  • Berlin police report about 18,000 seized items this year, including 151 homemade explosives, and 117 opened investigations, with the total illicit stockpile in the multiple‑ton range.
  • Recent operations include a Bundespolizei stop on the A12 near Frankfurt (Oder) with over 500 kg of fireworks and a late‑November raid securing more than a tonne, now under prosecutor review.
  • A Neukölln father turned in roughly 60 illegal bangers his 12‑year‑old bought via Instagram as police issue graphic safety warnings, and authorities remind that firing from balconies is prohibited and can draw heavy fines.
