Berlin S-Bahn Tender Closes Bid Phase After Years of Delays

The bid submission phase for the Berlin S-Bahn modernization tender officially ended on March 27, 2025, marking a key milestone after years of delays.
The tender, valued at over €5.4 billion, includes the operation of two sub-networks and the procurement and maintenance of at least 1,400 new trains.
The submitted bids will be opened on March 28, 2025, with Berlin and Brandenburg beginning the evaluation process to select an operator and supplier.
Interim contracts with Deutsche Bahn will remain in place until the new contracts are implemented in the 2030s to ensure uninterrupted service.
The modernization effort aims to replace aging trains and improve transit efficiency on the North-South and Stadtbahn lines, excluding the Ringbahn.
