Berlin Rolls Back Daytime Tempo 30 on 22 Main-Road Sections, Expands Nighttime Limits for Noise

Officials say cleaner air removes the legal basis for many daytime slow zones under the updated air-quality plan.

Overview

  • The Berlin Senate approved revised air-quality and noise-action plans that restore 50 km/h during the day on 22 previously restricted main-road stretches.
  • Daytime Tempo 30 remains on seven sections where pollutant limits are still exceeded and on 11 others for traffic-safety reasons near facilities such as kindergartens and nursing homes.
  • A review for high-frequency school routes led to keeping Tempo 30 in only two cases, with other examined stretches reverting to the default urban speed set by the StVO.
  • New nighttime rules will set 30 km/h from 22:00 to 06:00 across roughly 230 kilometers of main roads to reduce traffic noise for health protection.
  • SPD and Green politicians and environmental groups including Deutsche Umwelthilfe criticized the rollback, warning of safety risks as well as potential setbacks on air quality and noise.
