Berlin Residents Submit 6,800-Signature Petition to Overhaul Friedrichshain Grill Meadow

A Berlin parliament committee will soon decide whether to impose tighter time and equipment limits on Friedrichshain’s grill meadow.

Overview

  • Residents of the Neuer Hain neighbourhood lodged a petition with the Berlin Abgeordnetenhaus Petitionsausschuss calling for a comprehensive reorganization of the park’s grill meadow.
  • The petition has gathered more than 6,800 signatures to back demands for a binding 10 p.m. night-time curfew and bans on music boxes and unregistered private events.
  • Signatories warn that up to 1,500 people now gather on the 46 authorised plots, generating noise disturbances, air quality issues and waste accumulation in surrounding areas.
  • Bezirksamt Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg says park rangers and Ordnungsamt officers enforce the one-year-old grill limit and have expanded ash containers and waste bins.
  • The petitions committee will review the submission before recommending any amendments to existing grilling regulations.
