Berlin Records Highest-Ever Number of Antisemitic Incidents in 2024
A new report reveals over 1,380 antisemitic incidents in the first half of 2024, marking a sharp increase since October 2023 and raising concerns of normalization.
- The Research and Information Center on Antisemitism (RIAS) documented 1,383 antisemitic incidents in Berlin from January to June 2024, surpassing the total for all of 2023 (1,270).
- The report highlights a monthly average of 230 incidents, a significant rise from 50 incidents per month before October 2023, linked to the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
- Incidents include 25 violent attacks, two of which caused severe injuries, alongside threats, vandalism, and widespread online abuse, with 715 cases occurring on the internet.
- RIAS documented 74 antisemitic incidents at educational institutions, including 27 at schools, where Jewish children faced physical and verbal abuse from peers.
- The report warns of a potential normalization of antisemitism in public discourse, with many incidents involving anti-Israel slogans and rhetoric during demonstrations and public events.
