Berlin Public-Sector Unions Call Jan. 14–15 Warning Strikes Ahead of Länder Pay Talks

The walkouts seek leverage for Verdi’s 7% or €300 pay push after the first bargaining round stalled.

Overview

  • Four unions — Verdi, GEW, GdP and IG Bau — have announced coordinated strikes in Berlin for Wednesday and Thursday next week.
  • Targets on Jan. 14 include universities, police stations, the state immigration office, the citizens and regulatory affairs office, the fire brigade and public childcare centers.
  • A demonstration on Jan. 14 will proceed from Dorothea-Schlegel-Platz to the Rotes Rathaus with a closing rally around 10:00.
  • Actions on Jan. 15 will involve employees of Senate administrations, district offices, Kitas, universities and the state’s forestry operations, with protests planned around the Kongresshotel in Potsdam.
  • The strikes precede Jan. 15–16 talks in Potsdam, where the TdL has rejected Verdi’s 7% or at least €300 for lower pay groups over 12 months, and potential service impacts remain uncertain despite December’s documented closures and restrictions.
