Overview
- The Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office has indicted a 71-year-old and a 46-year-old for commercial fraud, embezzlement, bribery and subsidy fraud related to bogus invoices.
- Prosecutors accuse the older defendant of submitting 68 false bills totaling about €364,000 for unperformed gardening, demolition and disposal work.
- The younger man is charged with 31 fake invoices worth roughly €142,000 and with fraudulently obtaining €9,000 in COVID-19 relief funds.
- Investigators say both defendants funneled payments to a now-deceased Senate Administration employee who facilitated the scheme.
- The fraud came to light after an internal review following the official’s July 2020 death, and the case has now entered the prosecution phase.
