Berlin Philharmonic to Stage Wagner’s Ring at Salzburg Easter Festival From 2026 to 2030

Kirill Serebrennikow will recast each opera across different regions of the world.

Overview

  • The Osterfestspiele Salzburg confirmed the Berliner Philharmoniker, led by chief conductor Kirill Petrenko, will launch the multi-year Ring cycle in 2026.
  • Director Kirill Serebrennikow said each of the four operas will be tied to a different continent or world region, with film elements already shot in Iceland this summer.
  • The cycle begins with Das Rheingold in 2026 and is slated to finish by 2030, with a planned 2028 program featuring Schönberg’s Moses und Aron instead of a Ring installment.
  • The engagement marks the orchestra’s return to the Salzburg Easter Festival after serving there through 2012 before moving to the Osterfestspiele Baden-Baden in 2013.
  • Petrenko described the undertaking and renewed Salzburg partnership as the absolute highlight of his artistic career.
