Berlin Olympic Bid Push Forces Parliamentary Debate After 28,000-Signature Initiative

A hearing followed by a ruling is expected well before the summer recess following petition verification.

Overview

  • The Landessportbund delivered more than 28,000 signatures, surpassing the 20,000 needed to compel the Abgeordnetenhaus to take up the proposal for an Olympic and Paralympic bid.
  • Signature verification will be followed by committee referrals, a hearing, and a plenary vote expected before the summer recess, with the DOSB set to choose Germany’s bidder on 26 September 2026.
  • If lawmakers decline support, organizers may seek 175,000 signatures to trigger a binding referendum, while NOlympia pursues a counter drive that could lead to a vote no earlier than 2027.
  • The initiative links a bid to five commitments: more physical education, more movement in daycare and schools, renovated sports facilities, stronger volunteer support, and a grassroots sport fund.
  • Berlin plans visible outreach by late January with posters and digital content, plus workshops, online seminars and Kiez tours running through mid-April to involve residents in the process.
