Berlin Launches New Institute to Improve Teacher Training and School Quality

The new Landesinstitut aims to address long-standing educational challenges by centralizing teacher training and introducing evidence-based evaluation methods.

The Berlin Senate has opened the Landesinstitut für Qualifizierung und Qualitätsentwicklung to enhance teacher training and school quality.
The institute, located in Westend, will employ 250 staff to develop practice-oriented training programs for teachers, school leaders, and trainees.
Berlin students have historically underperformed in nationwide tests, prompting the need for improved teaching methods and educational standards.
The institute will centralize teacher training, previously conducted at multiple decentralized locations, and introduce modular training for new teachers by 2026.
It will also oversee data-driven evaluations of student performance and school quality, integrating findings into teacher training and curriculum development.
