Berlin Launches Inaugural Freedom Week for Mauerfall Anniversary

City leaders present an eight-day program intended to become an annual platform for defending democracy.

Overview

  • Freedom Week runs 8–15 November with about 130 events across roughly 80 Berlin venues, spanning conferences, cultural programs and public forums.
  • The opening World Liberty Congress convened at the Abgeordnetenhaus with around 200 dissidents from more than 50 autocratically governed countries.
  • Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, the event’s patron, opened the week by calling Berlin a city of freedom and urging global support for democracy.
  • The Berlin Freedom Conference on 10 November at the Gasometer will feature speakers including Julia Klöckner, Oleksandra Matviichuk, Wladimir Kara-Mursa and Ben Hodges.
  • The public program includes a BND action day, discussions at the former Stasi complex, exhibitions, a Taiwanese Night Market and a touring Freedom Week Mobil.
