Berlin Launches Inaugural Freedom Week Ahead of November Festival

The weeklong series will commemorate the Wall’s 36th anniversary by positioning Berlin as a global forum for democracy advocacy.

Overview

  • The inaugural Freedom Week will run from November 8 to 15, marking the 36th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s fall.
  • Under Mayor Kai Wegner’s patronage, the program will feature conferences, workshops, concerts, exhibitions, theater pieces, city tours and eyewitness talks.
  • Organizers have secured partnerships with the Robert-Havemann-Gesellschaft, Axel Springer Freedom Foundation, World Liberty Congress and the Berlin Commissioner for the SED dictatorship, Frank Ebert.
  • Over 200 freedom fighters from more than 60 autocratically governed countries are expected to discuss democratic change at forums including the flagship Freedom Conference on November 10 at the Gasometer on the EUREF-Campus.
  • visitBerlin is soliciting proposals for additional events across the city through August 31.
