Berlin Launches First 'Freedom Week' for 36th Anniversary of the Wall's Fall

City leaders cast the week as a standing commitment to defend democracy against rising autocracy.

Overview

  • Running Nov. 8–15, the state-owned Visit Berlin coordinates about 130 events at roughly 80 venues across the city.
  • The program opens with a two-day World Liberty Congress at the Abgeordnetenhaus, with about 200 dissidents from some 60 autocratic states expected.
  • A remembrance at the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße on Nov. 9 is set to include Governing Mayor Kai Wegner.
  • The Berlin Freedom Conference on Nov. 10 at the Schöneberger Gasometer plans discussions with figures such as Bundestag President Julia Klöckner, Oleksandra Matviychuk, Wladimir Kara-Murza and former U.S. General Ben Hodges.
  • Public offerings include the BND’s “Freedom. Security. Dialogue.” action day with guided exhibition tours via online registration, plus exhibitions, talks and workshops citywide.
