Berlin Knife Offenses Dip Following Transit and District Ban Extensions

Berlin’s Senate has extended knife ban zones into the public transport network to help curb violence flagged in recent police data.

Overview

  • Berlin police recorded 1,598 knife-related attacks and threats in the first half of 2025, an annualized decrease from the 3,412 cases reported in 2024.
  • Berlin police have maintained area-wide knife bans in hotspot districts and extended the prohibition to the entire public transport system.
  • Suspects were identified in 1,108 of the cases, with most individuals already known to authorities and predominantly male.
  • Among identified suspects, 964 were adults, 106 were aged 14–17 and 56 were younger than 14.
  • The highest incident counts appeared in Alexanderplatz, Wedding Zentrum, Tempelhofer Vorstadt, Reuterstraße and Neuköllner Mitte/Zentrum.
