Berlin Installs First Turnstile Gate at Görlitzer Park as Fencing Plan Advances

The Senate targets year-end completion with nightly lock-ups to counter drug dealing.

Overview

  • A turnstile gate was installed Wednesday at the entrance by Görlitzer Straße and Görlitzer Ufer.
  • A new dark-metal fence now lines shrubs along Wiener Straße for several hundred meters.
  • Procurement calls for 16 steel gates, eight vandalism-proof turnstiles and about 300 meters of added fencing, with completion targeted by year-end.
  • The Senate plans nightly closures to deter drug dealing, set for 22:00–6:00 in winter and 23:00–6:00 in summer.
  • Some residents, leftist groups and district Greens oppose the closures, warning of displacement into nearby housing, while most entrances remain unchanged and the installed elements are less conspicuous than at Tempelhofer Feld.
