Berlin Installs First Gate and Fencing at Görlitzer Park for Planned Night Closures

Officials say the project will be finished by year’s end to enable nightly lockouts targeting the park’s open drug trade.

Overview

  • A first entrance gate with a turnstile is in place at Görlitzer Straße and Görlitzer Ufer, and new metal fencing now lines parts of Wiener Straße.
  • The plan calls for 16 steel gates, eight large vandalism‑resistant turnstiles, and roughly 300 meters of additional fencing to close perimeter gaps.
  • Night access is slated to be restricted in winter from 22:00 to 06:00, and in summer from 23:00.
  • The Senate projects completion by the end of 2025 despite ongoing protests, following preparatory work in October at the Lübbener Straße entrance.
  • Opponents warn of crime displacement and accessibility issues for wheelchairs, large strollers, and emergencies, with a reported budget near €1.5 million and calls for stronger policing and social measures.
