Berlin Implements Permanent Weapons and Knife Ban in Crime Hotspots

The new measure, starting February 2025, targets three high-crime areas and includes strict enforcement with fines up to €10,000.

  • The Berlin Senate has approved permanent weapons and knife bans in Görlitzer Park, Kottbusser Tor, and Leopoldplatz, effective February 15, 2025.
  • The ban prohibits all weapons, including firearms, stun guns, and knives of any size, even kitchen and pocket knives, with limited exceptions for law enforcement and specific professions.
  • Police are authorized to conduct random checks without suspicion, and violations may result in fines up to €10,000 and confiscation of prohibited items.
  • The policy comes in response to a 5% increase in knife-related attacks in Berlin last year, with 3,482 incidents recorded in 2023.
  • A temporary weapons and knife ban will also be enforced during Berlin's New Year's Eve celebrations at the Brandenburg Gate to ensure public safety.
