Overview

  • Berlin Greens MPs Benedikt Lux, Tuba Bozkurt and Marianne Burkert-Eulitz have asked the Hotel and Restaurant Association to cap scoops for children from low-income households at €0.50 on a voluntary basis.
  • Dehoga chief Gerrit Buchhorn agreed to discuss the voluntary price cap, deeming the term “price cap” unfortunate but expressing openness to support disadvantaged youth.
  • Ice cream parlors cite higher rents, energy bills and wages as key factors that lifted the average scoop price from €1.62 in 2023 to €1.81 in spring 2025.
  • A YouGov poll for the Deutsche Presse-Agentur found that 64 percent of Germans view ice cream prices as too high and six in ten have cut back on orders versus five years ago.
  • Scoop prices vary sharply across Germany, ranging from about €1.30 in rural areas to as much as €2.80 in cities such as Hamburg and Munich.
