Berlin Firefighters Contain Two Basement Blazes in 24 Hours

Police have opened investigations into the causes.

Overview

  • Separate fires broke out Friday in basements on Marienfelder Allee around 13:00 and on Albrechtstraße in Steglitz shortly after 19:00.
  • In Marienfelder Allee, building parts and leaves ignited in a four-storey residential and commercial building, with 22 firefighters using two C-lines and a pressure ventilator to end the operation in about two hours without injuries.
  • In Steglitz, rubbish and stored firewood burned in the cellar of a multi-family house, prompting multiple engines and breathing-apparatus teams as smoke reached upper floors.
  • Fifteen residents were guided out via the stairwell in the Steglitz incident and were cared for at an assembly point.
  • Fire crews contained both blazes, preserved the buildings, and allowed some residents to return, while the causes remain undetermined.
