Berlin Faces Shortfall of Election Volunteers Ahead of February Bundestag Vote

Officials report a need for up to 3,000 additional helpers to fill critical roles in several districts for the upcoming parliamentary election.

  • Berlin's Landeswahlleiter Stephan Bröchler announced that 2,000–3,000 election helpers are still needed for the February 23 Bundestag election.
  • The districts of Mitte, Lichtenberg, Treptow-Köpenick, Neukölln, and Marzahn-Hellersdorf face the biggest shortages, with 700 volunteers needed in Mitte alone.
  • The total requirement for election workers has risen to 36,600, higher than the initial estimate of 30,000 made in November.
  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and German citizens, and they will receive an 'Erfrischungsgeld' ranging from €80 to €120 depending on their role.
  • The election follows the collapse of the federal coalition government, with Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier expected to confirm the February date on December 27.
