Berlin Excludes Grunewald From Wind Energy Plan, Targets Alternative Sites

Berlin must now evaluate sites outside its forests to fulfill a federal mandate requiring 0.5 percent of its land be designated for wind energy by 2032.

Overview

  • Governing Mayor Kai Wegner pledged that no turbines will be built in Grunewald and assured no trees will be felled for wind installations there.
  • Under federal law, Berlin is required to set aside half a percent of its territory for potential wind turbine locations by 2032.
  • City planners have identified Krummendammer Heide, Rieselfelder Karolinenhöhe and Buchholz Nord as viable zones for wind energy development.
  • Proposed turbines in the designated areas could reach heights of up to 230 metres.
  • Wegner has questioned the mandate’s realism for a city-state and wrote to Economy Minister Katherina Reiche to air his concerns after Nabu warned against forest-based wind farms.
