Berlin Ends Intensive Weapons Checks After Seizing 704 Prohibited Items

The city’s permanent ban on knives as well as other weapons on trains and stations, effective July 17, aims to enhance passenger safety citywide.

  • The Bundespolizei carried out 9,542 security checks at twelve Berlin train stations between May 26 and July 31 under a temporary weapons-carrying ban.
  • During this period officers seized 704 prohibited items, including 369 knives, 44 bludgeoning weapons, 17 other weapons and 12 pyrotechnic devices.
  • Authorities recorded 343 breaches of the station ban order and 231 violations of Germany’s Weapons Act.
  • The operation also uncovered 341 criminal offences—including 202 violent crimes and 185 drug-related cases—and 154 residency infractions.
  • Since July 17 a permanent ban prohibits all knives and weapons on trains and platforms across the city’s public transport network.
