Berlin Drugchecking Flags Health Risks in Nearly Half of Party Drug Samples

With 48 percent of nearly 3,600 samples flagged, the €200,000-a-year Drugchecking program is turning away about 50 users each month

Overview

  • The programme analysed nearly 3,600 samples of stimulants and synthetic party drugs from July 2023 to June 2025, averaging about 150 tests per month.
  • Almost half of submitted samples were found to be contaminated, mislabeled or containing potentially dangerous dosages.
  • Users are predominantly male young adults—over 75% aged 18 to 39—many of whom took warnings seriously, with around 27% considering quitting and 28% planning to reduce their intake.
  • Operating on a €200,000 annual budget, the state-funded service has turned away about 50 clients each month in its second year because of capacity limits.
  • Green Party spokesperson Vasili Franco is urging CDU and SPD to boost funding in next year’s budget to expand testing capacity and cut down on refusals.
