Overview

  • Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, Economy Senator Franziska Giffey and Transport Senator Ute Bonde presided over the ground-breaking ceremony on June 23, 2025.
  • Initial works focus on the Spree riverbank between Karl-Liebknecht-Straße and Rathausstraße opposite the Humboldt Forum.
  • The city-owned company Grün Berlin will oversee construction and develop barrier-free access with new sports, play and leisure facilities.
  • The scheme aims to reshape the space between the Fernsehturm, Marienkirche, Rotes Rathaus and the Spree into a unified town hall and forum complex by 2027.
  • The over-life-size statues of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, installed in 1986, will remain integral to the redesigned public space.
