Berlin Bid Faces Majority Opposition in New Poll

Germany’s Olympic committee will choose its national bid by autumn 2026 after assessing four regional proposals, with public referendums scheduled in several cities.

Overview

  • A Civey survey of 1,506 Berliners conducted from May 27 to June 10 found 56% viewing Berlin’s Olympic bid very or rather negatively.
  • Under the 'Berlin+' concept the capital and four federal states aim to bring the Summer Games to Germany in 2036, 2040 or 2044.
  • Leipzig leads in support with 73% in a December 2023 DOSB poll, and bids have also been submitted by Munich, Hamburg and North Rhine-Westphalia.
  • The NOlympia Berlin initiative has announced plans for a referendum to block the bid in the capital.
  • Final selection of Germany’s candidate will occur through a DOSB membership vote after public referendums and is expected by autumn 2026.
