Berlin Backs A100 Extension, But Federal Downgrade Puts Next Phase on Ice

Traffic around the Elsenbrücke remains constrained by delayed bridge works, prompting a plan to add a second inbound car lane on the temporary span.

Overview

  • A representative Civey survey of 2,500 residents conducted Aug. 27–Sep. 20 found 57% support and 32% opposition to extending the A100 to Lichtenberg.
  • Support is strongest among CDU, FDP, AfD and BSW voters, with SPD voters leaning in favor, while majorities of Greens and Left supporters oppose the project.
  • Autobahn GmbH has moved section 17 into a lower priority category without a timetable, signaling construction is unlikely to start this decade.
  • Since section 16 opened in late August, Treptow and Friedrichshain have seen heavy congestion, BVG temporarily halted some bus lines over the provisional bridge, and protests continued.
  • Reconstruction of the Elsenbrücke’s western span has slipped past December with experts pointing to January at the earliest, and the city plans two inbound car lanes by removing one bike lane and routing the remaining lane for two-way cycling as data show congestion rising near the bridge but easing on many southern streets.
