Overview
- The Berlin Senate adopted the Masterplan Brücken 2025–2040 on Tuesday, launching a 15-year program to renew the city’s bridge network.
- The program sets 175 full replacements and 125 major rehabilitations with about €1.84 billion in costs, drawing first funds from the 2026/2027 budget and seeking EU, federal and private financing.
- Officials said they will shorten planning and approval times that now average at least ten years by standardizing steps, digitizing workflows and expanding real-time condition monitoring.
- Berlin oversees 1,047 bridge structures, only about 19% are in good condition, which has forced weight limits, closures and detours for drivers, transit users and people on bikes.
- Traffic senator Ute Bonde said the goal is a secure, modern network, while coverage highlighted recent shutdowns, years of underinvestment and a push for faster fixes that residents can feel on daily commutes.
