Overview
- Activists used an unmanned aerial vehicle before dawn on July 15 to drape a 1.5×20 metre “Free Maja” banner on Jonathan Borofsky’s 45-tonne Molecule Man sculpture over the Spree River.
- Police detained a 27-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman at the scene, seized their unlicensed drone and accessories, reported them for Aviation Act violations, and then released them.
- A separate group of ten to fourteen masked protesters briefly blockaded the entrance of the ZDF Hauptstadtstudio to demand media coverage of Maja T.’s case and deliver a video statement.
- The actions follow the end of Maja T.’s 40-day hunger strike on July 12 and coincide with a German Foreign Office delegation sent to Budapest to negotiate her detention conditions and possible repatriation.
- Maja T. was extradited from Germany to Hungary in June 2024 in a transfer later ruled unlawful by Germany’s Constitutional Court and now faces up to 24 years in prison on alleged bodily harm charges.
