Berkeley Hit-and-Run Suspect Arrested After Elderly Tourists Were Struck

Police say a witness followed the fleeing car and investigators used license-plate readers and surveillance footage to identify and arrest a suspect.

Overview

  • A car struck a 78-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman at a crosswalk near University Avenue and Eighth Street about 9 p.m. on Oct. 7 and left the scene.
  • Berkeley police arrested 22-year-old Richmond resident Farhan Ayubi in El Cerrito on Tuesday on suspicion of two counts of felony hit-and-run and he is being held on $50,000 bail.
  • Officers credit an anonymous witness who pursued the vehicle for a description that, when combined with automated license-plate readers and security and city cameras in Berkeley and Emeryville, led to the suspect’s identification.
  • The victims were visiting from Barcelona and remain hospitalized in serious condition, and hotel staff said the couple had gone out for a walk before the collision.
  • Ayubi is scheduled for arraignment at the Wiley E. Manuel Courthouse and prosecutors will decide whether to file formal charges as investigators continue to review footage and records.
