Berchtesgaden National Park Rockfall Zone Remains Unstable, Trails Closed

Park authorities continue monitoring a visible fault crack pending a detailed geological report due in several weeks.

Overview

  • Geologist Stefan Kellerbauer found an additional unstable rock volume of at least 4,000 m³ beside Tuesday’s collapse and identified an open fissure in the Torrener Joch fault zone.
  • Trails No. 411 and No. 421 in the rear Wimbach Valley have been closed since the initial rockfall and will stay off-limits until the expert assessment is finished.
  • A 20-member hiking group was evacuated by a police helicopter following the collapse, with one person sustaining a minor ankle injury from a bouncing stone.
  • National Park Ranger Martin Weckel urged all visitors to respect the closures, warning that more loose rock could break away without warning.
  • The collapse site lies in a tectonically fractured section of the northern Kalkalpen where freeze–thaw cycles and past events—including a 200,000 m³ collapse in 1999—underscore ongoing instability.
