Benin Says Coup Attempt Foiled as ECOWAS Deploys and Nigeria Confirms Strikes

Regional troops head to Benin to reinforce constitutional order following the failed takeover.

Overview

  • President Patrice Talon is reported safe and says the situation is totally under control, with Cotonou calm Monday and security checkpoints still in place.
  • Authorities say roughly a dozen mutinous soldiers have been arrested after the brief seizure of the state broadcaster, while the putsch leader, Lt-Col Pascal Tigri, is reported to be on the run.
  • Two senior officers who were held by the mutineers — army land forces chief Abou Issa and National Guard chief Faïzou Gomina — were freed overnight, according to military sources.
  • Nigeria says it carried out air strikes in Cotonou at Benin’s request to help dislodge the mutineers from the national TV and a military site, and has deployed ground forces.
  • ECOWAS ordered the immediate deployment of elements from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, as the AU, UN and France condemned the attempt that came months before Benin’s April 2026 handover.
