Benidorm Assault Case Remains Unsolved Six Years After Mike Rydings’ Death

Spanish authorities have made no arrests in the six-year-old case, prompting Mike’s daughter to launch a new public appeal for witnesses

Overview

  • On June 23, 2018, 47-year-old builder Mike Rydings was attacked by a group of five to six men outside the Hippodrome Bar in Benidorm after watching the World Cup with friends.
  • He suffered a broken nose and severe head trauma that left him in a coma for a month and in a vegetative state before he died at Salford Royal Hospital in August 2019 aged 48.
  • Witnesses described the suspect as a white man in his 20s or 30s, standing between 5ft 7ins and 6ft tall, with a larger build and possibly wearing camouflage clothing.
  • Spanish police carried out an investigation and Greater Manchester Police interviewed more than 15 British holidaymakers but no charges were brought and authorities report no new leads.
  • Mike’s daughter, Hayley Barker, has renewed her public appeal for anyone with information about that night in Benidorm to come forward.
