Bengaluru’s Empire Restaurant Faces 30-Day Response Over Synthetic Colours in Kebabs

The state food regulator has flagged chicken kebabs from its Gandhinagar outlet for unsafe artificial dyes with a retest option at the restaurant’s expense

Overview

  • Food Safety Officer Ambarish Gowda collected two kilograms of chicken kebab samples from the Gandhinagar outlet on June 27
  • State Food Laboratory tests dated July 11 found the kebabs failed to meet Food Additives Regulations due to synthetic colour contamination
  • On July 26 the Food Safety and Drug Administration issued a formal notice giving Empire 30 days to respond or request a retest at CFTRI Mysuru at its own cost
  • The FSDA warned that failure to engage within the deadline will trigger legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act
  • Empire CEO Shakir confirmed the chain has stopped using artificial colours and plans to pursue independent retesting to challenge the findings
