Bengaluru Water Board Secures Guinness Record, Eyes Tariff Overhaul and Cauvery Expansion

Karnataka’s first water tariff revision in a decade aims to plug Rs 500 crore losses, expanding Cauvery supply to two crore people.

Karnataka DCM DK Shivakumar said nearly 35 per cent of citizens do not pay their water bills, yet the board continues to function.

Overview

  • A weeklong campaign from March 21 to 28 drew a record 5,33,642 pledges, earning BWSSB a Guinness World Record certificate presented on June 18 to Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
  • The board will revise water tariffs for the first time in ten years, adopting a transport-sector model to curb annual losses of about Rs 500 crore.
  • Under a new master plan led by BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar, Cauvery water will be extended to two crore residents, including 110 villages newly added to BBMP limits.
  • BWSSB faces challenges from a 35% non-payment rate and a single-pipe system that uses treated drinking water for all domestic purposes, prompting calls for dual piping.
  • The government has unveiled a Cauvery Aarti event at the Krishna Raja Sagar dam to boost tourism and create over 1,500 jobs.
