Overview
- IndiGo, Bengaluru airport operator BIAL, the Digi Yatra Foundation and IATA completed technical trials that proved a fully contactless flow for international journeys at Kempegowda International Airport.
- The pilot matched a traveler’s face to a secure digital identity from booking through boarding, which removed repeated passport and boarding pass checks at each airport gate.
- Partners began testing sign-ups using electronic passports to move beyond Aadhaar-based onboarding and to support interoperability on routes such as Bengaluru–Doha.
- Immigration clearance was not part of the trials and will require separate approvals and coordination with border and regulatory authorities before any live cross-border use.
- Bengaluru is the only Indian site in IATA’s global proof-of-concept and is preparing for larger deployments, while Digi Yatra now operates at 38 domestic airports including Navi Mumbai, Jammu and Srinagar.
