Bengaluru Saree Trader, Aide and Third Suspect Held After Viral Assault on Woman

Police filed BNS assault charges after the video drew public complaints, with the woman jailed separately on a theft case.

  • Bengaluru City Police registered FIR CR No. 196/2025 under BNS sections including 74, 76, 79, 115(2), 133, 126(2), 351(2) and 3(5) following review of the footage.
  • Trader Umed Ram and assistant Mahendra Seervi were arrested and remanded to 14 days' judicial custody, and police said a third woman participant in the assault was also detained.
  • The woman accused of theft was earlier arrested and remanded after a complaint alleging she stole 61 sarees worth about Rs 91,500 from the shop.
  • Senior officers acknowledged public protests and said the conduct of the City Market police is under review for how the incident was initially handled.
  • The assault occurred on September 21 on Avenue Road in Chickpet, where bystander and CCTV videos show the men kicking, slapping and dragging the woman before handing her to police.
