Bengaluru Police Arrest Two in Ganesh Festival Chain-Snatchings After Cross-State Hunt

Police describe the prime suspect as a repeat offender who was out on bail for about three months.

Overview

  • Yogananda, 35, was arrested on October 17 after a weeks-long search that traced his movements through Puducherry, Mumbai and Goa, according to police accounts reported by Times Now.
  • His alleged accomplice, N. Praveen, was picked up earlier when investigators traced the motorcycle seen in CCTV footage, which showed him riding while Yogananda brandished a machete.
  • The duo allegedly struck during late-evening Ganesh festivities in South Bengaluru areas including Girinagar, K. S. Layout and Konanakunte/Eshwari Nagar, with The Hindu reporting three women robbed of about 80 grams of gold.
  • Police say at least one woman was injured in the attacks, with Times Now reporting that one victim lost two fingers during a struggle.
  • Officers report recovering stolen jewellery and the weapon — Times Now cites 74 grams recovered — say four city cases are solved, and indicate they will examine organised-crime provisions as Yogananda faces roughly 25 prior cases.
