Bengaluru POCSO Court Summons Yediyurappa, Sets Dec. 2 Appearance

The move follows a High Court refusal to quash the case, allowing the trial process to proceed.

Overview

  • The summons were issued after the Karnataka High Court on November 13 upheld the special court’s cognisance of the CID chargesheet and declined to quash the case.
  • Invoking Section 35 of the POCSO Act, the court advanced scheduling and ordered the accused to present themselves on December 2 to facilitate timely recording of the child’s evidence.
  • Yediyurappa remains protected by anticipatory bail granted on February 7, and the High Court directed the trial court not to insist on his personal presence unless it is essential.
  • The CID filed a chargesheet of over 750 pages in June 2024 naming Yediyurappa and associates Rudresh M, Arun Y M and Mariswamy G, with allegations including sexual assault, destruction of evidence and attempts to silence the family.
  • The case arises from a March 14, 2024 FIR alleging the sexual assault of a then 17-year-old at Yediyurappa’s Dollars Colony residence on February 2, and the complainant mother died on May 26.
