Bengaluru MP Seeks to Halt Namma Metro’s 5% Fare Increase Planned for February

MP Tejasvi Surya challenges the proposed rise, citing calculation errors in the fare panel’s report and calling for a new review.

Overview

  • The roughly 5% increase was recommended by the Fare Fixation Committee at BMRCL’s request to cover operating and maintenance costs.
  • Tejasvi Surya alleges arithmetic anomalies, including use of 2016–17 as the base year, and has asked for the committee to be reconstituted.
  • He has written to Union Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM D. K. Shivakumar, and BMRCL MD J. Ravishankar.
  • Civic groups such as the Save Bangalore Committee and the Bengaluru Metro Passengers’ Association oppose the plan and warn of protests if it proceeds.
  • The challenge follows a major revision in February 2025 that raised some fares by up to 71% and set a Rs 90 maximum, with Surya claiming Bengaluru is now costlier than Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai and that delays have driven losses.
