Overview
- The Bengaluru Traffic Police has announced targeted bans and timed curbs on two-wheelers, autorickshaws and classes of goods vehicles across five elevated corridors, with measures starting on Sept. 4 for four stretches and on Sept. 11 for the Electronics City corridor.
- The Electronics City corridor faces the strictest rules: two-wheelers and passenger autorickshaws are barred round the clock and all goods vehicles are banned between 6 am and 10 pm.
- Officials cited safety data showing more than 41 deaths on the Electronics City and KIA Road flyovers in the past 19 months and that 70–85% of incidents on those corridors involved two-wheelers as the main reason for the move.
- The restrictions are explicitly trial-based and will be reviewed after implementation, with operational coordination still being discussed between BTP, the private operator BETPL and the Greater Bengaluru Authority.
- Commuters are divided over the bans, which are expected to shift travel patterns onto surface routes and public transit and could cause access problems for two-wheeler riders unless alternatives and enforcement plans are quickly put in place.
