Overview

• Sub-Inspector Rajkumar Karmakar, Officer-in-Charge of the Sagardighi Traffic Guard, was struck and killed by a speeding dumper truck on the Morgram National Highway in Murshidabad on the evening of July 11 while clearing a broken-down vehicle.
• The collision occurred at about 8:30 pm as Karmakar managed heavy congestion caused by a stalled truck.
• Police have impounded the dumper for a mechanical inspection and are awaiting the driver’s statement to determine liability.
• The incident follows a recent wave of monsoon-related and speeding-induced crashes across multiple states that have exposed chronic gaps in road maintenance, signage and enforcement.
• State authorities have registered FIRs, made arrests, offered ex-gratia relief and are planning infrastructure upgrades and tougher traffic regulations.
