Bengal Men Held in Nagpur With ₹1.21 Lakh in Fake ₹500 Notes

Investigators are probing whether the counterfeit notes were printed locally or smuggled via Bangladesh as part of a wider inter-state currency racket.

Overview

  • Tehsil Police stopped Jaminarul Hussain Lokman Sheikh (27) and Azimtanu Sheikh (29) near Mayo Hospital late Tuesday and seized 243 fake ₹500 notes valued at ₹1.21 lakh.
  • The duo admitted during interrogation to boarding the Geetanjali Express from Howrah and stealing a passenger’s bag containing the counterfeit currency.
  • A case has been registered against them under Sections 179, 180 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and they have been remanded to five days’ police custody.
  • Officials suspect the forged notes originated through a network that shifted operations from Nepal to Bangladesh following tightened security.
  • Police are tracing printing sources, financial trails and potential inter-state and international links to dismantle the broader racket.
